Nap transitions: when babies drop naps
Every few months the day changes shape. Here's when each nap usually goes, how to handle the switch, and a quick check for whether your child is ready.
| Transition | Typical age | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| 4 → 3 naps | 3–5 months | The evening catnap disappears; bedtime moves earlier. |
| 3 → 2 naps | 6–8 months | The late-afternoon catnap goes; wake windows stretch to about 2.5–3.5 h. |
| 2 → 1 nap | 12–18 months (often ~15 months) | Morning nap slides later until it becomes one midday nap. |
| 1 → no nap | 2.5–4 years (some later) | Nap shortens, then becomes quiet rest time; bedtime moves earlier. |
Is my child ready to drop a nap?
Your child seems to still need this nap. Keep the current schedule.
3 to 2 nap transition
Usually between 6 and 8 months. The first sign is often a battle over the late-afternoon catnap, or a catnap that pushes bedtime past 8pm. Drop it, stretch the remaining wake windows by 15 minutes every few days, and move bedtime earlier for a week or two.
2 to 1 nap transition
Usually between 12 and 18 months. It's the hardest switch because the gap is big: from about 3.5 hours awake to 5 or more. Slide the morning nap later, 15–30 minutes every few days, until it becomes a single nap around midday. Offer lunch just before, and don't be afraid of a 6:30pm bedtime while things settle.
Dropping the last nap
Most children stop napping between 3 and 5. Shorten the nap before cutting it, keep a quiet rest time after lunch, and bring bedtime earlier on no-nap days.
Nap transition questions
When do babies drop to one nap?
Most babies move from two naps to one between 12 and 18 months, most often around 15 months. A week of nap refusal at 10–12 months is usually a phase rather than readiness.
When do toddlers stop napping?
Most children stop napping between about 3 and 5 years old. Many 2.5–3 year olds still need a nap even if they sometimes resist it.
How do I do the 2 to 1 nap transition?
Push the morning nap 15–30 minutes later every few days until it lands around 11:30am–12:30pm, cap it at about 2.5 hours, and use an earlier bedtime while your toddler adjusts. Mixed one- and two-nap days are normal for a few weeks.
How do I do the 3 to 2 nap transition?
Drop the late-afternoon catnap and stretch the other wake windows gradually. Bring bedtime 30–60 minutes earlier for a week or two to make up for the lost sleep.
